KINNECT conduct a range of driving medicals nationwide that are designed to assess a person's Fitness to Drive for work purposes — Austroads-aligned, delivered in-clinic or onsite.
The short version
A Commercial Drivers Medical is an Austroads-compliant Fitness to Drive assessment for anyone driving a heavy vehicle, bus, taxi or other commercial vehicle for work. KINNECT delivers these medicals nationally — in our own clinics or onsite at your workplace — typically including a medical examination, vision and hearing tests, musculoskeletal screen, medical history review and (where required) urinalysis. Most drivers need to repeat the assessment every 3 to 5 years, depending on the state or territory.
Who needs a Commercial Drivers Medical?
Anyone who drives a vehicle for work has legal responsibilities to uphold with regards to their health. Commercial vehicle drivers must meet higher medical standards because of the demands of their work.
Heavy vehicle licence holders
Drivers operating MR, HR, HC or MC class vehicles must meet the higher Austroads "commercial" medical standard.
Public passenger drivers
Bus, coach, taxi and rideshare operators are held to the same commercial standard as heavy vehicle drivers.
Workers who drive for work
Anyone driving a vehicle in the course of their work has legal responsibilities to manage health risks that affect safe driving.

What happens on the day.
Requirements vary slightly across Australia, but most Commercial Drivers Medicals include the following components.
Medical history review
A clinician walks through your medical history, current conditions and any medications that could affect safe driving.
Medical examination
A standard physical exam covering blood pressure, cardiovascular signs and general fitness to drive.
Vision testing
Both corrected and uncorrected vision are tested. If you wear glasses, bring them — please don’t wear contacts on the day.
Audiometry
A short hearing test to confirm you can safely detect traffic, sirens and other auditory cues.
Musculoskeletal screen
A quick movement screen to confirm you have the range and strength needed to safely operate a commercial vehicle.
Urinalysis (where required)
Some jurisdictions require a urinalysis as part of the assessment. Your KINNECT clinic will confirm what applies.

KINNECT clinicians assess Commercial Drivers against the national Assessing Fitness to Drive standard (Austroads / National Transport Commission). State and territory laws determine the specific frequency, paperwork and triggers for review, and we’ll guide you through which apply.
A range of medical conditions can affect safe driving — including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, sleep disorders, neurological conditions, vision and hearing impairment, musculoskeletal limitations and the side effects of certain medications. These are explicitly assessed and discussed during your appointment.
What a conditional licence means.
If you have declared a medical condition, you may be issued with a conditional licence. A conditional licence lets you continue to drive as long as certain conditions are met — for example, only driving when corrective lenses are worn.
In some cases you may need to attend regular medical reviews and have the results forwarded to the Driver Licensing Authority. If you’re issued with a conditional licence, it’s your responsibility to comply with all conditions — non-compliance can lead to cancellation.

A Commercial Drivers Medical is typically conducted every 3 to 5 years, depending on the state or territory. Drivers holding a medium rigid (MR), heavy rigid (HR), heavy combination (HC) or multiple combinations (MC) licence, and public passenger vehicle drivers, all fall under commercial medical standards.
What happens if I wear glasses?
Please bring your glasses if you use them — we test both corrected and uncorrected vision. Please don’t wear contact lenses on the day. If you have a pre-existing medical condition, bring any relevant and current documentation.
What tests does a Commercial Drivers Medical include?
Requirements vary across Australia, but most assessments include audiometry, a medical examination, vision testing, a musculoskeletal screen and a medical history review. Depending on the jurisdiction, the medical may also include a urinalysis.
