Quick answer

The short version

KINNECT's SmartMove Manual Handling Training is a 90-minute, hands-on program delivered onsite at your workplace by tertiary-qualified physiotherapists, occupational therapists or accredited exercise physiologists. Each session combines a short theory presentation with a longer practical component built around the actual tasks your team performs, capped at 20 participants per session for high engagement. Programs can be customised to your site's high-risk manual tasks and are designed to reduce musculoskeletal injuries by driving lasting behavioural change.

Why it matters

Musculoskeletal injuries are preventable — with the right training.

Body strains during manual handling tasks account for a significant percentage of workplace injuries. They take a real toll on workers’ personal and working lives, and they’re costly for employers — productivity losses, claims costs and lost-time impact.

Drawing on the expertise of our registered physiotherapists and exercise physiologists and over 20 years delivering injury prevention to Australian workplaces, KINNECT has built a proven method for manual handling training — engaging, effective, and focused on positive behaviour change through simple, practical, realistic techniques.

Program overview

A 90-minute program built around your work.

A short theory presentation followed by a larger practical component — performed on the job using your own equipment to reinforce learning and drive behaviour change.

KINNECT consultant leading practical safety training for a group of high-vis workers at their workplace

Theory component

Roughly 30–45 minutes covering the principles behind safe manual handling and why technique change matters.

  • Best practice manual handling principles
  • Body biomechanics and spinal loading
  • Tissue fatigue and recovery
  • Movement efficiency
  • Anatomy and physiology of musculoskeletal injuries
  • Simple, practical and realistic manual handling techniques

Practical component

45–60 minutes on the job. Workers perform and/or simulate normal manual handling tasks using their own equipment while applying the techniques learnt in theory.

  • Performed in the workplace, not a classroom
  • Real equipment and real tasks
  • Live coaching against best-practice technique
  • Competency assessment for every participant
  • Collated results supplied back to the workplace
  • Optional digital completion certificates
How it works

From first call to summary report — the full pathway.

We make it easy to mobilise: a single call to confirm logistics, an optional site visit if you want full customisation, the training itself, then your report.

  1. 01

    Prior to training

KINNECT confirms the location, date and time, participant numbers, whether job-specific customisation is needed, and any site induction or PPE requirements. We also confirm whether you need a summary report.

  2. 02

    Customisation visit (optional)

A KINNECT consultant can visit your workplace beforehand to review the high-risk manual tasks performed, taking photos and/or video to build into your training so the content is relatable and relevant.

  3. 03

    On the day

Your allied health professional arrives 15 minutes early to meet key stakeholders. They run the 90-minute program — theory, then the on-the-job practical — and complete a competency assessment for every participant.

  4. 04

    After the training

Within 24 hours we issue a manual handling summary report (if requested) covering participant numbers, the education delivered, recommendations on behavioural or engineering changes and job-specific best-practice approaches.

Customise to your worksite

Built around the tasks your people actually do.

Every worksite is different. KINNECT offers full customisation so the training addresses the specific high-risk manual handling tasks performed at your workplace.

  • Pre-training workplace review by a KINNECT consultant
  • Hazardous manual task review with site photos and/or video
  • Task-specific content woven into theory and practical
  • Optional job-specific pre-start stretching program

FAQ

Manual Handling Training — answered.

The questions safety, HR and operations leaders most often ask before booking SmartMove.

Who delivers the training?

Our Manual Handling Training programs are delivered by tertiary-qualified allied health professionals — occupational therapists, physiotherapists and accredited exercise physiologists. Every consultant holds extensive experience in occupational health and the risks associated with manual tasks.

How long is the training?

The training runs for a total of 90 minutes — approximately 30–45 minutes of theoretical training followed by a 45–60 minute on-the-job practical session.

What is a musculoskeletal disorder?

Musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) are injuries or diseases of the musculoskeletal system — the skeleton, joints, muscles, ligaments, cartilage, tendons and connective tissue. They can occur suddenly (sprains, strains, soft tissue injuries, back injury) or develop over time through continuous overuse and static postures. Examples include acute or chronic pain, hernias, muscular and vascular disorders, joint and bone degeneration and nerve injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome.

What facilities are required for the training?

KINNECT requires access to either a TV (with HDMI input) or a projector for the theory component. If onsite delivery is needed without access to either, KINNECT will deliver the training and provide participants with handout materials instead.

How many participants can attend a session?

Sessions are capped at a maximum of 20 workers to ensure maximum engagement and to allow enough time for everyone to participate in the practical component.

Can the training be customised to our workplace?

Yes. KINNECT offers full customisation. A consultant can visit your workplace prior to the training date to review the high-risk manual tasks performed and capture photos and/or video. Those materials are then incorporated into your training so the content is relevant to the risks at your site.

Does KINNECT offer awareness materials?

Yes. KINNECT has a range of manual handling awareness materials available for purchase, including posters in a variety of sizes, manual handling pocket guide books and stretch cards.
