How to Prepare for your KINNECT Medical Appointment

Answers to frequently asked questions about your KINNECT medical assessment appointment.

Live Chat

What do I wear?

As you may be asked to move around a bit, we require that you wear closed-in shoes (ideally trainers or joggers – no thongs or sandals) and recommend loose, comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily.

You might be asked to remove some outer clothing for the examination (for instance, to check for hernias), so wearing appropriate underwear is essential.

Important: If you arrive without suitable footwear, the functional components of your appointment may not be completed, and you will need to return on another occasion to finish the assessment.

Why can't I drink caffeine before my medical?

Caffeine can raise your heart rate, so to ensure the most accurate results for your heart rate and blood pressure, you will need to avoid caffeine prior to your appointment.

We measure blood pressure and heart rate as part of any type of medical or functional assessment.  For other tests, such as drug and alcohol testing, you don’t need to avoid drinking caffeine. However, if you’re unsure, it’s best to avoid drinking caffeine before attending the clinic for your appointment.

Please ensure you are well hydrated by drinking plenty of water in the days leading up to your appointment, to ensure we can accurately interpret your results.

Can I use Ventolin before my spirometry assessment?

KINNECT prefer that you do not take Ventolin medication before completing any spirometry testing so that we can obtain accurate results. However, if you are significantly impacted by this and need to take Ventolin before your assessment, please feel free to do so as necessary.

There is more information about spirometry testing on this Frequently Asked Questions page.

What do I need to bring?

There are several essential items to bring to your appointment:

  • A copy of any prescriptions you currently have.
  • The details of any medication (prescription or over the counter) you are currently on or have taken in the last 14 days, including the name, dosage and when you last took it.
  • Your glasses (if you wear them). If you wear contacts, please remove them prior to the assessment and wear your glasses on the day. If you can’t do this, make sure you bring saline and your container so you can remove the lenses at the appointment.
  • Specialist reports: If you regularly see a doctor or specialist for a medical condition, please bring any recent reports or test results to your appointment.  This includes sleep study reports, sleep specialist reports, 3 months of CPAP usage reports (if used) and endocrinologist reports (for diabetes). These documents help us in assessing your fitness for the proposed job role and assists the doctor with their recommendations.
  • Any medical clearances from any recent surgery you may have had within the last 6 months.

What identification (ID) will I need to bring?

We require the physical/original copy of your ID that is in date (i.e. not expired). The accepted forms of photo-identification are those issued by Government Authorities:

  • Drivers Licence or Digital Drivers Licence (preferred method of identification)
  • Proof of Age
  • Student ID (government-generated, not from your educational institution)
  • Australian Passport (must be valid)

Some assessments specifically require a driver’s licence as the only form of photo identification, such as:

  • Rail Medical
  • Commercial / Dangers Goods Drivers Medical
  • Health Monitoring
  • Pre-Employment – driving roles

What do I need to do prior?

If you can, please complete the medical history questionnaire and any other paperwork via the booking link if sent to you via email / SMS. Don’t worry if you can’t, though. You can always complete this at the clinic on the day of your appointment.

How long will my appointment/s take?

Medicals can vary widely. Your appointment can take from 15 minutes to 2 hours, depending on what is required. If you need to have multiple appointments at different locations, for example for an x-ray, it could take most of the day.

If you are short on time, we encourage you to contact our Customer Service team at 1300 546 632 who can provide you with an estimated timeframe for your appointments.

What is included in my medical?

Appointments typically include two components: a general medical examination and a functional assessment.

Different types of assessments require different tests, and there can be a great deal of variation in the type of tests undertaken. Common assessments include:

  • Audiometry test (hearing)
  • Vision Testing (eyesight)
  • Urinalysis (urine test)
  • General Medical Examination
  • Medical History
  • Instant Urine Drug and Breath Alcohol Screen (DAS)
  • Spirometry (lung function)

If you’d like to know precisely what is included in your appointment, please get in touch with your prospective employer. They can confirm which assessments they need you to complete.

Can I bring my child/ren to my assessment?

Unfortunately, we are not able to welcome children to your appointment.

Due to a range of factors, the environment is not safe for children, and we are not able to provide supervision during your assessment. Please make alternative care arrangements for your children during your appointment. if you do bring a child with you on the day, then your appointment will not proceed.

Will I have to pay for my appointment?

Absolutely not. Under no circumstances will you have to pay for an appointment that has been scheduled and sent to you by KINNECT. This includes Radiology and Pathology appointments scheduled by KINNECT.

Your referral form includes a Biller Code payable by KINNECT. If if you have any issues at your appointment with this not being accepted please call KINNECT immediately on 1300 546 632 and do not proceed with making payment for an appointment.

Radiology (Chest X-ray) & Pathology

If your medical includes a chest X-ray, then we will send you a referral form and allocate you a date and time to attend a local radiology clinic.

Unfortunately, most radiology clinics do not accept appointments and work on a walk-in basis. This means wait times will vary. Should you wish to go to another radiology clinic, you can do so as long as the clinic is the same brand / company as noted on your referral form.

Will I have to provide consent prior to my appointment?

If an employer has requested you to take part in a medical, KINNECT  will ask for your consent to participate. As part of the assessment, KINNEC.T will collect, store, use and disclose specific health information to our client (the employer) for the specific purpose of providing your health assessment. This includes:

  • Reviewing your disclosed medical history
  • Assessing your health by completing a targeted examination and a range of tests
  • Reporting the results of the assessment to our client (the employer)

Please note that your participation in the assessment is voluntary – you may choose to discontinue the assessment at any time, although doing so may affect the outcome of your assessment.

KINNECT is bound to keep copies of medical records and cannot delete any part of the information collected during the process.

In the specific case of the CMWHS assessment:

We need specific consent to allow KINNECT to support the processes necessary to comply with legislated requirements concerning the collection and storage of confidential information by KINNECT for the AMA.

This is necessary to enable KINNECT to support the AMA to (i) complete a Section 4: which will be (ii) provided to a SSE ,and (iii) submitted with the medical and associated documents to RSHQ as required by legislation.

Please note: if you do not wish to provide the required consent, the medical cannot be completed for the potential employer.

What if I don't provide consent?

If you do not consent, KINNECT will not be able to complete the assessment and a report will not go back to your potential employer.  In this situation, you can either opt out yourself and contact the employer if you do not wish to provide consent, OR alternatively, KINNECT can contact your the employer to advise you haven’t consented and we cannot complete your assessment.

What do I need to do if I'm having a Respirator Fit Test?

If you are having a respirator fit test as part of your medical:

  • Please bring the mask and particulate filter (NOT gas filter) supplied by your employer. This is not required for BSL Respirator Fit Tests.
  • Ensure you are clean-shaven. Facial hair prevents passing the test as per AS/NZS 1715.
  • Do not smoke for at least 1 hour before the test.
  • Refrain from eating within 30 minutes before the test.
  • Do not wear glasses if you are wearing a full-face mask. Consider contact lenses if needed.
