What it is

Australia is one of the largest mineral producers and exporters of lead in the Western world, so occupational exposure to lead is unusually common — across mining, battery manufacture, paint and coatings, radiator and exhaust work, fire assay and structural steel.

Inhaled or ingested lead can accumulate silently and cause nerve, brain and kidney damage and anaemia if left undetected. Lead Health Monitoring Medicals are the statutory health checks — including blood lead testing — that catch exposure early, before it harms the worker.

The biological monitoring schedule.

Once the baseline medical is done, KINNECT runs stand-alone blood lead tests at the interval set by the worker’s last result and reproductive capacity — the schedule Safe Work Australia recommends, in line with the WHS Regulations.

Males & females not of reproductive capacity

  • Less than 30 μg/dLEvery 6 months

Females of reproductive capacity

  • Less than 10 μg/dLEvery 3 months

Tighter intervals and a lower trigger threshold apply because lead can remain in a worker’s system and affect future pregnancies.

The questions employers most often ask before standing up a lead monitoring program.

Who needs a Lead Health Monitoring Medical?

Any worker who carries out lead-risk work — including spray painting with leaded paint, lead-acid battery manufacture, fire assay, lead-paint removal, radiator repairs, cutting or grinding lead, and casting or melting lead alloys. Under the WHS Regulations the employer (PCBU) must arrange the monitoring before the worker starts lead-risk work and on an ongoing schedule afterwards.

What does a Lead Health Monitoring Medical involve?

A baseline medical covers an exposure-focused history, a physical examination and a venous blood lead test. After that, ongoing monitoring is usually a stand-alone blood lead test at the interval set by the worker’s last result and reproductive capacity. KINNECT clinicians review every result and flag any that hit a removal trigger.

How often does biological monitoring need to be done?

For males and females not of reproductive capacity: every 6 months if the last blood lead level was under 30 μg/dL, every 3 months if it was 30 to under 40 μg/dL, and every 6 weeks if it was 40 μg/dL or more. For females of reproductive capacity: every 3 months if the last result was under 10 μg/dL, and every 6 weeks if it was 10 μg/dL or more. We hold the schedule for every worker on the program.

Why are the intervals different for females of reproductive capacity?

Lead is stored in bone and can be released into the bloodstream over time, including during pregnancy, with potential effects on the developing fetus. Safe Work Australia therefore applies tighter monitoring intervals and a lower trigger threshold for females of reproductive capacity.

Can KINNECT deliver Lead Health Monitoring onsite?

Yes. We can deliver the baseline medical and ongoing biological monitoring in-clinic at our national network of KINNECT clinics, or onsite at your workplace for higher-volume programs. Onsite is often the most efficient option for battery manufacturing, lead recovery, paint stripping and similar continuous-exposure operations.

What happens if a worker’s blood lead level reaches the removal trigger?

The worker must be removed from lead-risk work and reviewed by a registered medical practitioner. KINNECT will flag the result to you immediately, support the medical review, and confirm in writing when the worker meets the criteria to return to lead-risk work.
