The short version
An Asbestos Medical is a doctor-supervised health monitoring assessment for workers exposed to airborne asbestos fibres. KINNECT delivers these medicals nationally — in our own clinics or onsite — covering occupational history, a respiratory-focused examination, spirometry and (if clinically indicated) a chest X-ray. A baseline is required before exposure begins, with periodic monitoring at least every two years and an exit assessment when the worker leaves the role. Records are retained for 40 years to meet WHS obligations.

Exposure to airborne asbestos fibre can cause mesothelioma, asbestosis, lung cancer and pleural plaque. Under WHS regulations, businesses conducting asbestos-related work — including asbestos removal — must provide periodic health monitoring to workers so disease can be detected early and the effectiveness of respiratory protection can be reviewed.

What happens during an Asbestos Medical.
Every assessment is completed under the supervision of a registered medical practitioner and captures the same core information so results are consistent, defensible and comparable over time.
Demographic & occupational history
A full work history capturing previous and current asbestos exposure, role, tasks and protective measures used.
Medical & exposure history review
Records review for prior exposure to chemicals or hazards requiring health monitoring, plus current respiratory health.
Respiratory-focused physical exam
A physical examination performed by a registered medical practitioner, with particular focus on the respiratory system.
Spirometry (lung function test)
Objective spirometry to measure lung volumes and airflow — a key baseline for detecting respiratory disease early.
Chest X-ray (when clinically indicated)
A chest X-ray arranged when the doctor determines it is clinically indicated, with radiologist reporting.
Doctor review & sign-off
A registered medical practitioner reviews every result, signs off the monitoring report and flags any concerns.
When an Asbestos Medical is required.
Health monitoring is required across the full life of a worker's exposure — from baseline, through periodic monitoring while exposed, to an exit assessment when the role ends. KINNECT programs are scheduled centrally so recalls and exits don't slip through the cracks.

Records retention: Health monitoring records for asbestos-exposed workers must be kept for 40 years after the record is made. KINNECT stores and manages these records on your behalf so you can produce them on request from a regulator, insurer or worker.
