It is inevitable that at some stage in the coming months, workplaces will have employees who recover from COVID-19 and will want to return to work.

Employers should have appropriate procedures in place to ensure that any employee returning to work following recovery from COVID-19 is safe to do so, without placing any other employees at risk.

COVID-19 Return to Work Service Employee safe (1)

HOW IT WORKS

Returning an employee to work following a suspected and/or confirmed case of COVID-19 is a difficult and often significantly complex process that requires specialist input and guidance. Returning an employee to work too early can place a substantial risk to the organisation in having a COVID-19 outbreak.

Under the guidance of our Occupational Physician, KINNECT have developed a comprehensive COVID-19 Return to Work Service to help organisations manage the risk associated with an employee returning to work post a suspected and/or confirmed case of COVID-19.

The resolution of an individuals symptoms is not sufficient for an organisation to consider the employee safe to return to work. The employee may still be in shedding the virus and returning them to work will place their colleagues at risk of catching COVID-19. There are a number of factors that need to be considered when determining an employees fitness to return to work following COVID-19:

  • Current and past symptoms
  • Symptom timeframes (onset, infectivity and resolution)
  • Hospitalisation vs non-hospitalisation
  • Isolation and/or quarantine completed
  • COVID-19 test results (type and number of test results)
  • Medication use
  • Pre-existing co-morbidities and health conditions
  • Position and level of contact with colleagues/customers

Call to our COVID-19 Hotline

Either the employee or a manager can initiate the Return to Work Service by contacting our COVID-19 Hotline. During this call, a consultant will work through a series of questions with the individual to ascertain important information necessary in making a determination regarding the individuals fitness to return to work. This may involve the engagement of an Occupational Physician for cases deemed to be potentially high risk.

Direction and Reporting

Once the determination has been made, the individual and employer will receive a call to discuss the individual’s return to work and the framework this will follow. A formal report will be sent, providing clear direction for the employer as to the workers return to work status and future considerations.

Employee Health Management and Symptom Diary

In the event an employee requires quarantine and/or isolation following triage, KINNECT will monitor the health of the employee periodically. This would also involve developing a symptom diary which assist in determining when the employee may be able return to work. Should it be required, KINNECT will also co-ordinate necessary COVID-19 testing and/or medical treatment should severity of symptoms escalate.
