The purpose of a respirator mask in healthcare is to protect an individual from inhaling hazardous pathogens or particles at work. In healthcare, filtering half facepiece respirators and N95 or P2 masks are globally the most frequently used respirators — but those masks only provide satisfactory airborne protection if they properly fit the individual’s face to form a tight facial seal.

Quantitative fit testing

KINNECT uses only quantitative fit testing to ensure maximum protection for healthcare workers. Quantitative respirator fit testing uses an instrument called a PortaCount, which measures the leakage of particles around the face seal of the respirator mask and produces a numerical value called a fit factor.

The fit factor tells you — objectively — whether the chosen respirator provides adequate protection for that individual. It’s considered the gold standard for healthcare workers exposed to hazardous airborne particles in the workplace.

A structured program — coordinated from first contact to final reporting — that respects how busy a healthcare environment is and minimises disruption to clinical operations.

    Program setup & preparation

    We confirm the makes and models of respirators used in your healthcare setting, ensure the correct PortaCount adapters are available, and brief your workforce on the common factors that cause unnecessary fit-test failures so repeat appointments are minimised.

  2. 02Bookings

    Coordinating large workforces

    We use an online bookings service to help you keep track of who is booked, along with reminder SMS and email messages to maximise participation. For clinic-based testing, individuals are sent automated notifications with their appointment time and location.

  3. 03On the day

    Each fit test

    We allow approximately 20 minutes per worker. For onsite programs, our tester arrives 30 minutes before the first appointment with all required equipment. Each employee is told the outcome of their fit test during their appointment.

  4. 04Repeat tests

    If a mask fails

    Workers who fail their first fit test are offered another mask make/model on the day where possible — or rebooked for a follow-up appointment if a different respirator needs to be sourced.

  5. 05Reporting

    Group summary + per-worker PDFs

    After testing is complete, KINNECT prepares a group summary report detailing the outcome for each employee, plus a copy of each individual’s PortaCount report in PDF format for your Respiratory Protection Program records.

    Face Fit Test Cards

    Workers with a pass result can be issued with a Face Fit Test Card detailing the make/model passed on, the date of testing and an expiry date. Available at an additional cost where required.

What is respirator fit testing?
It is a test that measures how well a tight-fitting respirator (such as a P2 or N95) seals against an individual’s face. We use a PortaCount instrument to measure leakage and produce a numerical "fit factor".
Who needs fit testing in healthcare?

How long does a fit test take?

What happens if I fail the test?
Where possible we retest with a different make or model of respirator on the day, to find one that achieves an adequate seal for your face.
How should I prepare?
Confirm your respirator models in advance and be clean-shaven around the sealing surface — facial hair is the most common cause of a failed fit test.
What do we receive afterwards?
Each worker receives an individual PortaCount PDF report, and you receive a group summary report. A Face Fit Test Card showing the result and expiry can also be issued at additional cost.
What standard does it follow, and where is it delivered?
Testing is aligned to AS/NZS 1715:2009. It can be delivered onsite at your facility (the tester arrives around 30 minutes early to set up) or at KINNECT clinics in major cities.
