Our occupational physicians are based in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne and support clients from over 20 KINNECT offices around Australia. When a doctor isn’t available close to you, we’ll work with you remotely and via telehealth — without compromising the quality of the assessment or the report.

What is an Independent Medical Examination (IME)?
An IME is an impartial medical assessment carried out by a doctor who is not the worker’s treating practitioner, used to give an objective opinion on a worker’s health, capacity or fitness for duty.
Who requests an IME?
Employers, insurers and regulators typically request an IME to support a workers’ compensation claim, a return-to-work plan, or a fitness-for-duty decision.
Why does the examination need to be independent?
Because the examining doctor has no treating relationship with the worker, the opinion is objective and free of conflict of interest, which makes it more reliable for decisions and disputes.
What is the worker assessed against?
The worker’s condition and capacity are assessed against the genuine physical and psychological demands of their specific role.
Where are IMEs conducted?
IMEs are conducted in-clinic, onsite at the workplace, or via telehealth across Australia.
What do we receive after the examination?
A clear, written report setting out the doctor’s findings, opinion on capacity or fitness, and recommendations to support your decision.
Who carries out the examinations?
