Why seek an Independent Medical Examination for Fitness for Duty?
Common reasons for referral include:
- A finding of concern identified through routine or targeted health surveillance.
- An issue identified during pre-employment screening that may impact fitness for the proposed role – evaluation to determine whether temporary or permanent workplace adjustments are needed to support safe and sustainable work.
- Disclosure of a health issue that may impact attendance, task performance, or the ability to meet the inherent requirements of the role safely.
- Clarification is needed on whether prescribed medications or treatment plans may impair safe work performance, particularly in safety-sensitive roles.
- Clarification of fitness following conflicting or unclear medical advice: when the treating doctor or rehabilitation provider reports differ or lack sufficient clarity for risk management decisions.
- Any other reasonable concern relating to a worker’s health, behaviour, or functional capacity that may affect safe and effective role performance.
