Workplace counselling that helps your employees get ahead of the mental health complications that psychosocial factors pose to their recovery and productivity.
In a large percentage of workers compensation claims, psychosocial factors are a main contributor to the claim’s outcome, and recovery timeframe, over and above any medical factors.
Psychosocial factors such as the perception of workload, relationship with direct line manager, enjoyment of the role, interpersonal relationships, perception of safety, and even what’s happening outside work, influence the mental health of all employees. They become a cause for concern when they result in a medicalised psychological condition and compensation claim.
Even when there is no potential link to a workers’ compensation claim, when psychosocial and personal concerns are left unaddressed, they can have a significant negative impact on the workplace and individuals.
KINNECT’s Workplace Counselling service is an early intervention measure that can mitigate impact of psychosocial risks before they become a claim, and before psychological issues cause harm to your employees.
Why Workplace Counselling is Important
In both physical and psychological workplace rehabilitation cases, the influence of psychosocial risk factors not only prolong a successful recovery but can impact the chances of a successful return to work by compounding or complicating the situation or perceptions being experienced.
Outside of worker’s compensation claims, psychosocial and personal concerns – if not identified and addressed early – can have significant impacts on productivity and morale. Signs that there may be an issue include absenteeism or presenteeism, health issue presentations, workplace conflict, a drop in performance or reports of feeling overwhelmed, either at work or more generally in life.
KINNECT’s Workplace Counselling service is delivered by registered or provisional psychologists and rehabilitation counsellors who understand the interaction between health, rehabilitation, psychosocial factors and the workplace.
They can provide counselling that is conducted within confidentiality and ethical guidelines that involves the employer to resolve, and if necessary, mediate the issue before the worker feels that they have no option than to submit a claim.
Workplace Counselling benefits your organisation with:
- Fewer psychological claims
- Faster recovery and more successful return-to-work outcomes
- Lower absenteeism
- A happier, more productive workplace
- Employees who feel listened to and supported

How this Service Works
STEP 1 – Triage & Matching: Firstly, we’ll match an appropriately qualified KINNECT allied health professional with the referred worker ensuring that their approach, style or specific traits contribute to a successful intervention. We’ll also take the time to address and questions or concerns that the referrer has.
STEP 2 – Virtual Sessions: The worker will then receive counselling, generally over over five (5) sessions, which will be focused on listening, supporting, and resolving the issue(s) impacting them at work, or relating to their claim.
Sessions are held virtually so that your worker has access to the best-match professional, regardless of location. This also allows sessions to be occur more promptly with shorter notice and with greater flexibility of times. In our experience, participants often feel safer accessing these services virtually from an environment that is comfortable for them (e.g. their home).
STEP 3 – Tools & Resources: these are provided to the worker to empower them to successfully and independently manage what they are experiencing and understand the factors that are making them feel this way. This may involve linking the employee in with additional resources and actions.
STEP 4 – Collaboration: KINNECT will also work closely with the workplace to ensure any recommendations meet business needs and a collaborative approach is taken to implementing them. Our team provide the right balance of support and disclosure with appropriate business acumen to facilitate a positive outcome for both the worker and their workplace.
FAQs
Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) are a fantastic source of support and important employee benefit. However, as the service is completely anonymous, employers who wish to support workers whose mental wellbeing is impacting their work, are limited by:
- A Lack of insight to if they have accessed support and if what has been presented to the counsellor is consistent with the impacts observed by the workplace
- Unknown Counsellor quality/business acumen with recommendations that may not be compatible with business operations
- A lack of feedback to assist the workplace to support the employee’s recovery and work
KINNECT’s Workplace Counselling service matchs an appropriately qualified KINNECT allied health professional with an employee, providing the right balance of support and disclosure with appropriate business acumen to facilitate a positive outcome for both the worker and their workplace.
Whilst mental ill health or psychosocial issues may not be work related, it is well known that these issues can still impact the workplace, and sometimes quite significantly. Examples include presenteeism, absenteeism, poor productivity/performance and interpersonal difficulties.
The SuperFriend’s ‘2023 Indicators of a Thriving Workplace Key Insights Report’ shows that organisations that invest in building mental health capabilities can increase productivity at the same time. Implementing mental health programs is worthwhile for organisations, who can gain a $15 return on investment in the way of productivity, retention, and reduced work injury claims, for every $1 spent on effective initiatives (Return to Work South Australia. (2023). Mentally Healthy Workplaces.)
During the triage process, KINNECT will establish what, if anything, the workplace would like to receive feedback on.
At times, the workplace may wish to simply provide their worker with a confidential professional to support them, not requiring any feedback.
Other times, the workplace may be keen to understand how they can help and support their employee which requires a certain level of understanding regarding specific issues or perceptions.
This understanding will allow KINNECT to be transparent with the worker during the first session of what will be kept confidential. It will be explained that the purpose of the intervention will be to support the individual, and any information shared with the workplace will be discussed with the individual in the first instance.
No – not at all.
If the issue is resolved, or it is identified that further intervention will not be beneficial, KINNECT will cease service provision prior to the maximum five sessions.
Furthermore, the workplace may decide on an alternative maximum number of sessions – for example, 3 per employee; or approval of an additional 1-2 sessions if needed on a case-by-case basis to address a specific concern.
