Domestic Seafarers Medical

In Australia, a Domestic Seafarers Medical refers to a medical examination that is required for individuals working as seafarers on domestic vessels within Australian waters. The medical standards and requirements for domestic seafarers are set by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), which is the regulatory body responsible for maritime safety and seafarer certification in Australia.

The Domestic Seafarers Medical in Australia typically includes the following components:

  • Physical examination: This involves a general physical assessment, including measurements of height, weight, blood pressure, and assessment of overall physical fitness. The doctor will evaluate the seafarer’s cardiovascular health, respiratory system, musculoskeletal function, and overall physical well-being.
  • Vision and hearing tests: Seafarers’ visual acuity and color vision are tested to ensure they meet the required standards. Hearing tests may also be conducted to assess auditory function.
  • Medical history and review of systems: The seafarer is required to provide information about their medical history, including any past illnesses, surgeries, or chronic conditions. The doctor may ask questions related to various body systems to identify existing or potential health issues.
  • Laboratory tests: Blood and urine samples are collected for analysis to screen for conditions such as diabetes, kidney function, liver function, and blood disorders. Additional tests may be required based on individual circumstances or specific regulations.
  • Mental health assessment: The seafarer’s mental health may be evaluated through questioning or standardized psychological assessments. This helps identify any psychological or psychiatric conditions that may impact their ability to work safely at sea.

The specific requirements and standards for the Domestic Seafarers Medical in Australia are outlined in the AMSA’s Marine Order 76 (Health — medical fitness standards and training) and associated guidelines.

Upon completion of the medical examination, the doctor will issue a Certificate of Medical Fitness if the seafarer meets the required health standards. This certificate is typically valid for a specific period, after which the seafarer must undergo periodic medical assessments to maintain their medical fitness certification.

It’s crucial for seafarers to stay updated with the latest requirements and regulations from AMSA, as they may undergo revisions or changes over time.

FAQ

How often should a Commercial Drivers Medical be conducted?

All seafarers and coastal pilots must be assessed for medical fitness to perform at sea to be issued with a certificate of medical fitness.

A certificate of medical fitness may be issued for:

  • Up to 2 years; and
  • Up to 1 year if at the date of the assessment the person is:
    • Not more than 18 years old; or
    • At least 55 years old (with resting ECG or stress ECG, if in a critical job and clinically indicated).

The seafarer should undergo a medical examination if there is a change in their medical condition and after prolonged absence from seagoing duties of 3 months or more due to injury or illness.

What happens if I wear glasses?

Please note that for this assessment it is important to bring glasses, if you use them. Please do not wear contacts as we will check both corrected and uncorrected vision. If you have a pre-existing medical condition, please bring any relevant and current documentation.
