Thirteen of our aspiring leaders have joined our new leadership program to develop their skills and progress in their careers. We caught up Accredited Exercise Physiologist, Georgia Gough, about how she is finding the course.

The Emerging Leaders Program (or ELP as it is known internally) is our home-grown talent program where we build and invest in the business leaders of tomorrow, today.

KINNECTers apply and are selected to join the program from all over the business. Some are already supervisors; others have no people management responsibilities. Some are consultants working in workplace rehabilitation or occupational health, while others are in support services and Admin. All have one thing in common; a desire to progress in their career and develop themselves.

Georgia, who is currently based in our Mascot clinicoriginally joined KINNECT in Cairns in 2017 after a year in private practice.

“Since coming to KINNECT, one of the things I had wanted to work on was my public speaking skills. I was not particularly confident with speaking in front of large groups. All the project work at KINNECT has absolutely helped me conquer this skill. Last year, I presented Health and Nutrition training to 180 male miners out in Wilpinjong (near Mudgee). It sounds a bit intimidating but after doing this, I felt I could do anything!

“I’ve always strived to be my best self. I was conscious that I needed to work on my leadership skillsI saw the ELP as a chance to improve my weaknesses, work on my skills and keep challenging myself.

“The leaders within KINNECT are excellent role models. They are knowledgeable, experienced; it is really a quite unique opportunity to get to know the Executive Leadership Team and learn what they have learned through doing the job.

“To me, a good leader thinks about the language they use, gives constructive feedback, is supportive, approachable and fair. For me, it is all about people. This is the first introduction to ‘leadership’ I have had in my career and I really want to work on those skills.”

The ELP course goes for 12 months covering a wide variety of topics. The first topic covered was effective meetings. In addition, participants will have reading and task work to complete in between sessions.

Effective meetings was a really interesting way to start because as a consultant, I’m in meetings all the time. There were some clear take-home messages and tips to allow people to have their opportunity to get things off their chest, but also to help meetings to stay on topic and achieve their purpose.

“The first book we read and reviewed was Traction: Get a Grip on Your Business. It covered six areas of business and I could clearly see the link to what we do at KINNECT and why. The reading is challenging and makes you think; it is a part of the course know I will enjoy.

KINNECTers on the ELP are asked to think about the personal goals for the course and what the future holds for them.

“For me, implementing what I have learned, embedding this knowledge into my relationships with employees, clients etc is the first step. In the longer-term, I would like to see myself further develop those leadership skills and branching out a bit further in terms of my supervisory responsibilities.

Georgia has really enjoyed the variety of project work at KINNECT

“As a growing business, KINNECT has lots of opportunities for career development and progression. The leadership and structure supports people to achieve their full potential.

There is a lot of variety in what we do. As someone who gets bored easily, I find the mixture of project and onsite work, clinical work, and case management personally extremely rewarding.

Combined with the excellent team we have in Mascot; with great friends and colleagues, I couldn’t think of a better place to be at this point in my career.”
