Mines rescue operations are physically and psychologically demanding and such duties can often be performed in conditions that may not be well tolerated.

Toxic atmospheres and poor ventilation encountered during rescue operations require mine rescue personnel to wear self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA). This, combined with very physically demanding work such as moving fallen materials and retrieval of casualties, can significantly increase the risk for conditions such as heat stress and/or injury.
To be a mines rescue member requires a high level of health and fitness than compared to normal mining operation roles. Therefore health assessments for mines rescue personnel are designed to assess the health and capacity of the individual to be able to safely perform the mines rescue role.

Who should complete a Mine Rescue Medical?
All Mine Rescue Personnel must undertake a Mine Rescue Medical.
Health assessment for mines rescue personnel must be carried out:
- every 2 years for persons up to age 40
- every year for persons aged 40 and over.
Does a Mines Rescue Medical include a Drug and Alcohol Test?
No. The Mine Rescue Medical does not include a drug and alcohol test, however sometimes your employer may request you complete a drug and alcohol test at the time of your Coal Board Medical. The results of your drug and alcohol test will not be reviewed or commented on by the AMA when they complete the Section 4 summary.
How long does a Mines Rescue Medical take?
A Mine Rescue Medical will take between 1 – 2 hours to complete the Coal Board Medical and approximately 30 minutes to conduct the Fitness Test/s.
